Description

It's an all-time classic 2-D racing game! You select from one of eight different drivers and then it's off to the races. Drive around the track as fast as possible avoiding enemy bullets and collecting money all along the way. If you collect enough cash and finish in one of the top four spots, you can buy your own ammunition or improve your driving skills. Don't forget - select your driver carefully - since each driver has their own abilities including traction, acceleration, speed and armour.

Review

Somwhat reminding us of the Micro Machines games, not super, but fun to play after a while. After a while, yes. When you first play this game, it will have nothing attractive about it, but as is the case, in my humble opinion, with many CD-i games, it turns out to be a fun and even slightly addictive game that will keep you driving for a long long time. Driving... The fact that you keep looking at the roof of your car doesn't really give you a real driving experience, but if racing games is what you're looking for, then CD-i is certainly not the right platform for you. The only real - if you know the game, don't start laughing now - racing game CD-i had to offer was Video Speedway.

The idea is simple. You get to choose a car, and as you race and make it to a top position, you score points and earn money, that can be used to buy speed, acceleration, and even guns. Another way to get some extra cash, is to drive over, and thus pick up, the coins you'll find on the race tracks. You can shoot your opponents, once you have a gun to damage their cars and so disable them for a couple of seconds. Off course, this can happen to you too, and severely damage your car! When your health bar reaches its end, your car explodes and is replaced a few seconds later. Those few seconds are often enough to make you lose your first position, at least if you had that spot in the first place. And with only a couple of laps to go, it's pretty hard to catch up with the fastest racers on the track when you're even just a little behind.

Not the best CD-i game around, but certainly not the worst either. It guarantees lots of fun and features a nice background soundtrack with some famous movie quotes... Can you guess which movies they're from?
